9 Best Tips & Advice for Solo Female Travelers

I offer this list as a vague guideline. Full disclosure, I myself do not follow it as strictly as I could. Shout out to my angels working overtime.

Remember: there is wiggle room. You are NOT always in danger, although society will have you believe otherwise. As long as you are aware, careful, and follow #9 (the only non negotiable) you can make it out there.

Save a photo of your Passport

This isn’t just for security reasons, it’s because many places (tour companies, hotels, car rentals, etc.) will ask to see it. Save a copy on your phone to avoid carrying it around. Pro tip: Memorize the number!

Scatter cash

Backup cash is great in case you get pickpocketed or, in my case, have the guy you’re hooking up with empty your wallet and then text back “no, I don’t see your money.” Keep some in your wallet, cleavage, suitcase, and hotel/stay. Scatter it thoroughly and you will always have a backup plan.

Arrive during the day

Nothing is worse than arriving to a location in the middle of the night with no service and having to knock on someone’s door for help just to have their cat side eye the whole time. Yes, I’ve been there. If you must arrive at night, have a driver waiting for you so you know exactly where you’re going and how you’re getting there.

Blend in

Take cues from women in the region. Observe their way of being. Cover up as much as they do. Don’t be the girl twerking on a man in conservative India, meanwhile no other women are dancing. Basically, don’t be me at 23. Avoid framing everything in a Western and/or liberal perspective. You do not need to save anyone. You are there to learn.

Pay attention

I have been to music festivals, partied, gotten free rides, and walked home at 4AM ALL alone. You too can do what your pretty little heart desires as long as you PAY ATTENTION to your surroundings. Awareness is key. Sobriety is awareness’ best friend.

Look men in the eyes

when they’re talking to you, especially if you want to get rid of them. Be clear, brief, and direct. When you avoid being direct, you’re dragging out the show. A simple “no, thank you” is more effective than you think.

Be gentle with yourself

Take breaks. Hydrate. Thank yourself for all your hard work. It’s easy to get frustrated when something goes wrong. I’ve been pickpocketed, followed, in a car chase, and in a car accident. I’ve missed flights, had panic attacks, and so much more. Trust me, you’re doing great sweetie.

Do scary things

Get on the back of a motorcycle, jump off a cliff, and talk to strangers. No one knows you. No one thinks you look crazy, that’s just in your head. Let go of outdated versions of yourself. You are THAT girl.

Connect to your intuition

Learn how to distinguish between the fear and noise in your mind and real danger. Don’t worry, this will happen naturally over time. All you need is a little patience and practice.

Since everyone and their mother has told you a thousand times to “be safe,” let me remind you it’s just as important to have fun!
